From the ground up.

Until late 1983, a cow paddock occupied the current site of Gnomes Landscaping and Garden Supplies, when the current owners purchased the land and began the transformation to what has today grown into a large and busy supply hub.  The land was cleared and bays were erected to hold soil, gravel, mulch and bark, as well as an area dedicated to a plant nursery.  We opened for our first day of trade in May 1984.

It became apparent in those early days that termites were an enormous problem in our area; in fact, they destroyed our first stock of hardwood sleepers.  The devastation they wreak was needlessly affecting many people and their property, and it was at this point we decided to look into Treated Pine as the best possible solution to a growing problem.

Solution to a big problem.

We established a relationship with Koppers Wood Products, the original manufacturers of treated pine in this country, and they remain one of our main suppliers today.  In fact, we are currently the single biggest stockist of Koppers products between Sydney and Brisbane.

Treated pine proved to be enormously popular, eventually forcing us to expand to our current size and to incorporate a fully-equipped timber workshop.  We then began stocking a complete range of construction grade treated timber suitable for a huge variety of end-uses.  We now buy treated timber by the semi-trailer load and adhere to that old adage of “Stack it high and sell it Cheap”.

Moving forward whilst retaining our original ideas.

Looking to the future, we continue to explore new and emerging trends in landscape and garden supplies, all the while continuing to offer materials at the best possible prices, as well as superior advice and service for free.

Gnomes has been owned and operated by the Hiley family since its inception all those years ago.  That’s 30 years of continuous service to the people of the Manning, Great Lakes, Gloucester and Port Macquarie regions.
